To give some context, Ondaatje was stating that a book he wrote gained early success and then won him the 1992 Broker award which allowed him to “quit teaching for good.” By following his passion, Ondaatje gained the freedom he desired that enabled him to do what he wanted to do.
He followed the good ole rule: Don’t quit your day job until your dreams are making you more financial gains than your reality. Essentially his dreams became his reality. Therein lies the freedom. Freedom of choice.
Writing stories gives me freedom from that which haunts me, dwells within me, and needs to be expressed. I get to tell you through my characters what I love, what I hate, what I don’t understand, and what my imagination wants to show you.
Freedom is the goal. Discover the paths that will grant you the choices you desire.
